ePortfolios

ePortfolios as a space for meaning making

“ePortfolios, as a space for synthesis, with their multimodal composing abilities, with their portability, allow students to engage in reflective dialogue over time, meaning making across courses, curriculum, and experiences. Who students are now, in a given moment, is not who they will always be. Thus, engaging students in a habit and practice that they can apply long after they leave us suggests that ePortfolio is a pedagogy of integration, an evolving gestalt with space and time for growth, change, and meaning making.”

Clark, J. Elizabeth. “From Selfies to Self-Representation in Electronically Mediated Reflection: The Evolving Gestalt Effect in ePortfolios” in Kathleen Blake Yancey’s A Rhetoric of Reflection (2016).

Background

ePortfolio has been central to Clark's work since 2002, when she joined the founding team of what became LaGuardia Community College's nationally recognized ePortfolio program. Over more than two decades she has served as pilot faculty, Research Team member, Assessment Leadership Team member, and Interim ePortfolio Director. She co-led the ePortfolio Leadership Team and regularly facilitated year-long professional development seminars bringing faculty into ePortfolio practice across disciplines.

Her scholarly work on ePortfolio has appeared in the International Journal of ePortfolio, Computers & Composition, Peer Review, and edited collections including Kathleen Blake Yancey's A Rhetoric of Reflection. She serves as Associate Editor of the International Journal of ePortfolio (2018–present) and has been a reviewer since 2011.
